Wrth Dictionary

The Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (Wrth) presents this terminological dictionary, featuring approximately 2,000 specialized terms in traditional arts. It aims to empower researchers, educators, students, and professionals by providing access to documented scientific and knowledge-based content that reflects the depth of the artistic and artisanal experience in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In doing so, the dictionary embodies the Institute's role in achieving integration between authenticity and modernization, reinforcing its mission to transform traditional heritage arts into a contemporary national knowledge and cultural resource.

Objectives of the Wrth Dictionary:

  • Collect and classify traditional arts terminology, techniques, and methods.
  • Document concepts associated with artisanal practices and safeguard them within a reliable knowledge reference.
  • Serve practitioners, enthusiasts, and researchers in traditional arts across all categories and levels.
  • Contribute to the standardization of terminology used in the traditional arts sector and promote its usage.
  • Provide lexicographical material suitable for digital applications, supported by linguistic and semantic analysis.

Methodology of the Wrth Dictionary:

  • The Wrth Dictionary was developed according to modern scientific methodologies in lexicography, taking into account the nature of artisanal terms and their connection to traditional practice.
  • Its construction was based on a comprehensive inventory of traditional arts vocabulary sourced from field and knowledge references, including actual artistic practices and specialized literature.
  • Terms were processed lexicographically through definition and classification, linking them to their practical contexts to ensure accuracy and clarity.
  • Experts in traditional arts and linguistics participated in building the dictionary to ensure the integrity and quality of the content.

Bridging practice and documentation, we present the first specialized dictionary unifying the language of traditional arts in the Kingdom.
