AnnouncementsIn a qualitative step that contributes to building a specialized knowledge reference for traditional arts, the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (Wrth) has launched "The Wrth Dictionary of Traditional Arts Terms." This academic project is dedicated to documenting specialized terminology and defining meanings according to precise linguistic and methodical foundations.
This dictionary comes in response to the need for unifying terminology associated with traditional arts and filling the gap in specialized references. By transforming orally transmitted knowledge into documented content available for study and development, the project aims to enhance the sustainability of these arts and pass them down through generations.
The dictionary features more than 2,000 specialized terms collected and classified across multiple fields, including the architectural and cultural environment, traditional tools and equipment, professions and crafts, products, fashion and attire, as well as arts and aesthetic expressions. This comprehensive compilation reflects the richness and diversity of craft and artistic practices in the Kingdom.
The dictionary relies on an integrated scientific methodology, beginning with building a comprehensive linguistic corpus, followed by classifying and describing terms, and concluding with editing them according to precise and reliable lexicographical standards. This was achieved with the participation of an elite group of experts and specialists, alongside collaboration with the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language to ensure the accuracy of the content.
This publication represents an extension of Wrth's efforts to develop an integrated knowledge ecosystem for traditional arts and enhance their presence within academic and cultural contexts. It supports the creation of a national reference that contributes to consolidating cultural identity and highlighting the civilizational depth of the Kingdom.
