About the course
Book and document conservation is a fundamental pillar in preserving cultural memory and safeguarding written heritage for future generations. Manuscripts and historical books are exposed over time to various forms of deterioration, requiring specialized scientific and technical intervention that balances the preservation of material authenticity with long-term functional and historical sustainability.
The program offers specialized training that combines guided theoretical learning with intensive hands-on practice. Participants develop practical skills in protecting and conserving leather book covers and bindings in accordance with internationally recognized standards. The methodology is based on 75% practical training and 25% theoretical instruction, supported by direct supervision from experts affiliated with a leading international institution in the field, enabling participants to engage directly with real-world conservation challenges.
Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Classify types of historical papers, leathers, and binding headbands, and distinguish between their stylistic and functional properties through direct examination.
- Analyze and apply ethical principles for the restoration of books and documents, including reversibility, minimal intervention, and historical accuracy when evaluating restoration procedures.
- Select appropriate materials and cleaning methods and justify them scientifically, while evaluating their impact on the specific document type to avoid potential damage.
- Design a flexible restoration protocol and adapt the materials and techniques used to suit the condition and physical properties of the artifact.
- Execute professional structural binding restoration, including disassembly, spine treatment, and the reconstruction of structural elements, while producing a complete restoration model.
- Prepare visual and systematic documentation of restoration processes, detailing the stages before, during, and after treatment in accordance with professional standards.
Entry Requirements
- The applicant must be a professional or an enthusiast working in fields related to the restoration and protection of books, documents, and manuscripts, or other relevant fields.
- Successful completion of the "Restoration and Protection of Books, Documents, and Manuscripts" program offered by Wrth, or completion of similar accredited programs in restoration and preservation from leading institutions (supporting documentation must be attached).
- Submission of a CV or a portfolio that highlights the applicant’s technical skills and experience in the field of restoration.
