About the course
Wood Inlay Art (Al-Rashm) is an ancient traditional craft that highlights the precision of traditional ornamentation in Saudi Arabian woodwork, adding exceptional artistic and aesthetic value to timber. This craft represents a fusion of manual skill and geometric sense, relying on precise techniques for carving, drawing, and inlaying decorative motifs. Using hand tools and natural materials, it requires high concentration and a deep understanding of the nature of different wood types.
In this course, trainees will explore the concept of the Rashm craft and its historical use. They will start by selecting tools and preparing materials, followed by learning the traditional application steps and techniques for carving and decoration. Ultimately, participants will produce contemporary wooden pieces that carry the fingerprint of authentic identity while catering to modern tastes.
Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Identify the history of Al-Rashm and its various applications in woodwork.
- Recognize the tools and raw materials used in executing the art of Rashm, along with their preparation methods.
- Execute the steps of the Rashm technique and integrate them into a contemporary product.
