About this course

Traditional wooden doors are among the most significant elements of historic architecture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They were not merely structural components, but cultural façades that reflected social status and the visual identity of the Najdi house. Through intricate geometric patterns, symbolic carvings, and the skilled use of local wood, these doors embody the craftsmanship of traditional carpentry and the accumulated knowledge passed down through generations.

During the program, participants explore the historical foundations of traditional wooden door artistry, understand the geometric terminology and decorative patterns associated with it, and move into hands-on practice using traditional tools and techniques for carving, engraving, coloring, burning, and nail ornamentation on Tamarisk wood, while adhering to safety standards within the woodworking studio.

Outcomes

  • Explain the historical and traditional aspects of woodworking and carpentry in Saudi Arabia, with a specialized focus on the Najd region.
  • Utilize traditional tools and techniques for carving, engraving, coloring, wood burning (pyrography), and nail ornamentation on Tamarisk wood efficiently.
  • Produce heritage-inspired pieces, including engraved and colored panels, wood-burned designs with nail ornamentation, and a final independent project.
