About the course
Traditional clothing in Saudi Arabia is a living reflection of the country’s cultural identity and social diversity across its regions, with each garment characterized by distinct features that mirror its local environment. This course explores traditional attire from various areas in the Kingdom, with an emphasis on the central region and the iconic Najdi garment, Al-Maqta’.
Participants will learn about the cultural and artistic aspects of traditional clothing, acquire skills in sewing and hand embroidery, and gain foundational knowledge in fashion design and project execution. Each trainee will design and produce a personalized version of the Al-Maqta' garment, decorating it using contemporary techniques inspired by heritage. Attendees will complete an independent project.
Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Identify traditional Saudi Arabian attire from various regions.
- Use foundational sewing tools and techniques (both manual and machine) to accurately assemble and construct components of an Al-Maqta’ garment.
- Finish an Al-Maqta’ garment, including the hem, sleeves, and neckline, using techniques such as facing (sijaf).
- Apply hand embroidery techniques, including Naqda stitch and patchwork (tarqee').

- This course is open to all community members aged 18 and above.
- Basic sewing skills are required.
