About this course

The preservation of World Heritage Sites is a vital responsibility, as these sites represent exceptional cultural and natural value that reflects the history and diversity of humanity. Their growing significance in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with several prominent sites inscribed on UNESCO’s list, highlights the need to develop national capacities specialized in their management and protection.

This program offers a comprehensive journey that introduces participants to the criteria and mechanisms for inscribing sites, principles of sustainable management, and strategies for mitigating risks. Through case studies and the development of practical management plans, the course raises awareness of the role of World Heritage in achieving sustainable development and ensuring this legacy for future generations.

Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the basic concepts of the World Heritage system.
  • Compare the three lists of the 1972 World Heritage Convention.
  • Classify the risks threatening World Heritage Sites and propose ways to manage them.
  • Identify the characteristics of the Outstanding Universal Value of the Saudi sites on the list.
  • Enumerate the required procedures for registering heritage sites and analyze their role in achieving sustainable development.

Entry requirements

  • This course is open to all community members aged 18 years and above, who have a high school diploma or higher accreditation.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have completed the "Introduction to UNESCO" program offered by The Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (Wrth).
