Program Overview

The Traditional Weaving (Sadu) Apprenticeship Program is considered one of the most important programs that serves the handicrafts sector and preserves the heritage of traditional weaving in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The program delivers essential knowledge and skills in the Sadu craft, through which the apprentice learns the basics, history, tools, and methods of preparing and dyeing the raw material. Furthermore, the apprentice practices traditional weaving and knitting skills, in preparation for developing functional Sadu products. All training is conducted under the supervision and guidance of specialists and expert craftsmen who practice the craft in its authentic form.

Key knowledge and skills acquired

  • Preparing the raw Sadu material through spinning, plying, and dyeing.
  • Applying the basic and preliminary techniques of traditional Sadu weaving, including traditional weaving and knitting/crocheting skills.
  • Executing all authentic traditional Sadu patterns proficiently.
  • Applying occupational safety and health procedures.
  • Developing functional Sadu products through repetitive training and practice.
  • Drawing designs for Sadu textiles and various motifs (patterns).
  • Applying machine sewing techniques.
  • Utilizing appropriate techniques for product realization (e.g., taking measurements, drawing patterns, cutting fabric).
  • Calculating the number of hours, the cost of raw materials, and the final product cost.
  • Preparing a portfolio for presentation and developing the curriculum vitae (CV).
  • Replicating the product with the required quality and specifications.
  • Demonstrating effective communication skills.
  • Applying theoretical concepts and practical knowledge in the work environment.
  • Applying procedures related to creative problem-solving as needed.
  • Producing in large quantities with commercial standards while maintaining quality.
  • Practicing labor market skills (e.g., marketing, pricing, and dealing with customers).

Admission Requirements

  • The applicant must be 18 years of age or older.
  • No prior experience is required, but genuine passion and interest in traditional crafts are essential.
  • The applicant must be a Saudi national or the son/daughter of a Saudi mother.
  • The applicant must be in good general health and possess physical fitness suitable for the nature of the craft, free from chronic diseases.
  • Full commitment to the training (full-time dedication).
  • A written approval must be submitted from the employer (for employees) to ensure no conflict with working hours.
  • Successful completion of the admission test and skills assessment.
  • Successful completion of the personal interview and practical evaluation.
  • Adherence to the rules and regulations of the Institute and the program.
  • The applicant must not have been dismissed from any apprenticeship program during the past year.
