Program Overview

The Apprenticeship Program in Mud Building is the first of its kind in the Arab world, serving the construction sector and preserving the architectural heritage of Saudi Arabia. The program offers a unique and valuable experience for individuals interested in traditional construction, specifically those wishing to learn the craft of mud building through training modules and hands-on practice at heritage sites and modern projects. This training is conducted under the supervision of academic specialists and skilled artisans.

The program provides enrichment opportunities for those interested in traditional construction, equipping them with knowledge and practical experiences related to these techniques. Students will get an opportunity to achieve leadership in learning rare skills to reintroduce and revive them, especially in response to a growing interest in traditional crafts.

  • Traditional construction, its history and diversity 
  • Analysis and preparation of soil and building materials 
  • Construction techniques with traditional materials 
  • Contemporary traditional architecture 
  • Conservation and restoration methodologies for traditional mud construction

Key Knowledge and skills acquired 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of basic techniques in traditional construction
  • The ability to select and determine the quality of clay building materials, understand the methods of their preparation, testing and inspection
  • Identifying contemporary techniques of mud buildings, and analyzing and evaluating the structure of a specific heritage building; identifying restoration needs based on an understanding of the historical and architectural nature of the building and materials used
  • Ability to implement restoration plans using basic skills and techniques and under the expert supervision

Admission requirements

  • No prior skill level in mud construction is required 
  • The applicant must be a Saudi national or the child of a Saudi mother
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must be in good health
  • Must be fully available and committed for the entire duration of the program
  • Must provide written approval from their employer (if employed), ensuring no conflict with working hours
  • Must pass the admission test, skill level assessment, personal interview, and practical evaluation.
  • Must comply with all rules, regulations, and policies of the apprenticeship programs and the institute
  • Must not have been dismissed from any apprenticeship program within the past year.
  • Must fulfill any additional requirements announced at the time of application
