Taasheeq is found in the decorative panels of rushans across the Balad. It uses skilful systems of interlocking joints, requiring no wood or nails. Students learn how to create taasheeq joinery to preserve its now rare knowledge. They analysed and drew a design from AlBalad known as mafrooka, and worked in groups to create two taasheeq panels. They handcarved interlocking joints and chamfers to make seamless edges. The pathways were finally treated with inlay techniques.
Drawings; graphite and pen on paper and tracing paper.
Taasheeq panels; beech wood inlaid with walnut, wingy, black ebony, camel bone, brass.
