About the Competition

As part of the initiatives of the Year of Handicrafts 2025, the Royal Institute for Traditional Arts (WIRTH) is launching the Scientific Research Competition in Traditional Arts. The competition aims to support high-quality studies and research that shed light on this vital sector and enhance its presence in both cultural and academic spheres. It seeks to encourage researchers to produce reliable scientific content that contributes to the development and sustainability of traditional arts and crafts in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, while also linking them to sustainable development pathways and the cultural economy.

Competition Objectives

  • Support scientific research in the field of traditional arts.
  • Promote the sustainability and development of handicrafts in line with contemporary advancements.
  • Encourage knowledge and innovation in artisanal arts.
  • Enrich the national cultural content with credible scientific references.

     Target Groups

  • Academics and researchers in the fields of arts, culture, design, or history.
  • Postgraduate students and independent researchers.
  • Professionals working in museums, art centers, or related cultural institutions.

Research Fields

The initiative focuses on three main themes:

  • Studying sustainable and alternative materials in traditional crafts and arts.

  • Researching rehabilitation and sustainability in traditional arts.
  • Analyzing the evolution of methods and practices in Saudi traditional crafts.

2.Technology and Innovation
  • The impact of innovation on marketing traditional crafts and expanding them to global markets.
  • Using technology in teaching traditional arts and crafts.
  • Analyzing works resulting from creative collaboration between humans and machines.
  • Digitizing and documenting traditional craft heritage.

3. Education and Training
  • Utilizing artificial intelligence in teaching, analyzing, and documenting craft skills.
  • Analyzing curricula and teaching methods in traditional arts education.
  • Measuring the impact of training on the quality of craft products.
  • Developing educational curricula for traditional arts.

 

Eligibility Requirements

  • The applicant must hold a Master's or Ph.D. degree, or have a record of published research.
  • Commitment to the specified application period.
  • The research proposal must not be submitted to any other entity.
  • If the proposal is accepted, the applicant is required to publish the research paper in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
  • Acceptance of all commitments outlined in the application form.
